We started because positioning work was being done too quickly.
Mythara Advisory was set up to offer a different kind of engagement — one that moves at the pace of genuine thinking rather than the pace of a billing cycle.
Back to HomeA practice built around one conviction.
Mythara Advisory was founded in Johor Bahru in 2019 by a small group of advisors who had spent the previous decade working within and alongside professional services firms across Malaysia. What they noticed, again and again, was a gap between how these firms actually worked — carefully, with genuine expertise — and how they presented themselves in writing.
The proposals were often vague where they should have been precise. The "About" pages described things no client had ever asked for. The capability notes relied on language borrowed from firms operating in entirely different contexts. The writing did not lie, exactly, but it did not tell the truth very clearly either.
We set up Mythara Advisory to address that gap, and to do so at a pace that the work deserves. Good positioning is not a sprint. It requires extended conversation, careful listening, and the patience to keep returning to a question until you find the answer that actually fits — not the first answer that sounds plausible.
We work with a small number of firms at a time, mostly in Johor and greater Malaysia, though occasionally with firms based elsewhere. Our engagements are structured, short, and specific. We do not offer retainers or ongoing consulting relationships. We do the work, deliver the writing, and step back.
"To help professional services firms arrive at a written account of who they are that is honest, specific, and worth reading."
- Structured sessions rather than open-ended retainers
- Writing produced from conversation, not questionnaires
- Fixed scope, fixed price, set before work begins
- Small number of engagements at any one time
- No templates, no borrowed frameworks

The standards we hold ourselves to.
Client confidentiality
We treat every conversation and document shared with us as confidential. We do not discuss one client's positioning challenges with another, and we do not use client material in case studies without explicit permission.
Written engagement terms
Every engagement begins with a short written note setting out scope, deliverables, timeline, and price. There are no surprises at invoicing and no undisclosed expansion of scope without a separate conversation.
Quality review before delivery
All written deliverables are reviewed internally before being sent to the client. A second advisor reads every positioning note and style document for clarity, accuracy, and internal consistency.
Honest counsel
We will tell a client when we think their instinct about their positioning is wrong. We do not simply produce what is asked for if we believe it will not serve the firm well. That honesty is part of what we are retained to provide.
Data protection
Client materials are stored securely and not retained beyond the engagement period unless agreed in writing. We comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 in all our data handling practices.
Follow-up commitment
The Positioning Practice engagement includes a structured follow-up review at six months. We want to know whether the note still holds, what has shifted, and whether any adjustment is warranted.
Why positioning matters for professional services firms
Professional services firms — lawyers, accountants, consultants, specialist advisors — are built on trust. That trust is established over time through direct relationships, through track record, through referrals. Written materials have historically been secondary to all of this, and many firms have treated them accordingly.
What has changed is that the written first impression now precedes the personal introduction more often than it did. A prospective client reads a proposal before they meet the partner who wrote it. A referral looks up the firm online before they call. The writing is doing more work than it used to, and it often is not ready for that responsibility.
Positioning is not marketing in the promotional sense. It is an act of clarity — a decision, made carefully, about what the firm genuinely stands for and who it genuinely serves. That decision shapes not only external communication but also internal choices: which mandates to pursue, which to decline, which capabilities to develop, which to leave to others.
At Mythara Advisory, we work with firms that are ready to make that decision with some seriousness. Our engagements are short and specific by design. We are not trying to transform a practice or reimagine its strategy. We are trying to help it say clearly, in writing, what it already knows about itself.
A conversation costs nothing.
If you are wondering whether this kind of work might be useful for your firm, the easiest starting point is a brief note through our contact form. We will read it carefully and respond within two working days.
